Jobs in New Plymouth & Taranaki

The Taranaki region has leveraged a rich petroleum and gas resource and established dairy sector to provide the second highest GDP per capita in New Zealand.

Taranaki has long been the hub of New Zealand’s oil and gas industry, and while our carbon reduction targets are likely to restrict further exploration, embedded demand and carbon reduction strategies will require a dedicated workforce for some time to come.

Taranaki is also one of the country's top four dairy farming regions, alongside Waikato, Canterbury and Southland.

In the year ending June 2018 the region was home to an estimated 2.4 per cent of the national population, while providing 2.3 per cent of national employment, and 2.9 per cent of the national GDP.

Taranaki is the centre of New Zealand’s oil and gas, but volcanic soils and reliable rain in the region support extensive beef and dairy farming.

The excellent soils and temperate climate also encourage a wide variety of other agriculture and horticulture initiatives, where seasonal workers are needed.

Tourism is a key industry in the region, where casual work is constantly in demand.

New Plymouth also hosts the annual WOMAD festival at the city's famous Pukekura Park and Bowl of Brooklands, each March.
