Fishing and hunting

Hunting and fishing is a big part of many New Zealanders' lives.

However, to protect the natural environment, there are some regulations you must follow.

The Ministry of Primary Industries website lists rules for where you can fish and how much you're allowed to catch each day.

Every person who wants to go freshwater fishing or game bird hunting in New Zealand must buy a licence from Fish and Game New Zealand.

If you want to hunt pigs, chamois, tahr, wallaby, goats and deer on public conservation land, you must apply for a permit with the Department of Conservation.
