Ken Saito enjoys the work life balance in New Zealand. He sometimes goes fishing after work and also has time for the evening meal at home with his wife Jenny and their daughters.
Family dream becomes reality
Ken: Hi, my name is Ken, Ken Saito. I'm originally from Tokyo, Japan.
Jenny: Hi, I'm Jenny Saito. I'm originally from Malaysia, but have been living in Japan for nine years, and we just moved to Christchurch with my husband, Ken, and my two kids. We thought about coming to New Zealand because the work and life balance is not very good in Japan.
Ken: Then, after we have Kids ... That's when we started to look for other options.
In August we came here for holiday, and then, next year in February, we submitted all the necessary documents. … September that year, we had an interview with a case officer. Then, we got the resident visa, luckily. Next working day I set up a meeting with my boss, and I say I'm going to quit.
Jenny: When we first arrived, everything was very new to us. II think we were very lucky, because we have friends in the church. I think, one of the church member - he's also in the IT field - He's actually from Hewlett-Packard, so he actually kind of recommended … so I think connections seems to be important
Ken: ..so I'm a Senior Software test analyst
Jenny: Yeah, after Ken got a job, we were actually renting initially - but we were planning to buy a place of our own, because our rental is super expensive here in Christchurch… We actually visited 87 open homes altogether within in a period of five months [chuckles]. But after visiting many houses, we kind of know the price and what to expect, and put in an offer for this house, and yeah .. We got our dream house.
Ken: ... Here, ah..... I think the life and work balance is very good. So weekdays I usually can come back before 5pm, and I ..got a lot of things I like to do, for example, I like to do some DIY work, ahh .. Do-it-Yourself
Jenny: We like the fireplace, the backyard, the garden. There are lots of place to play.
I find that the people here are very accepting, and they actually like talking to people from different countries …
Ken: ... before I come to New Zealand, I expected the life is going to be ...coming back from office early, enjoying the time with the family, enjoying the nature here
What I found is exactly that, but just that it's better than what we expected, better than what I expected. So, I'm really enjoying the life here.
