A number of statutory bodies you may need to contact in the course of setting up or managing your investment are also listed. In general, these organisations collaborate closely.
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise
NZTE is the Government’s national economic development agency. It can respond to enquiries on any aspect of investing in New Zealand through its network of investment managers in New Zealand and around the world.
NZTE promotes New Zealand as an investment destination and helps potential investors take advantage of opportunities in New Zealand.
Its services include helping international investors to relocate their businesses to New Zealand, establish greenfield operations and invest in and work with New Zealand companies in global ventures.
NZTE also matches high-growth New Zealand businesses in strategic sectors to international investors.
The Investment Team
The Investment Team is a specialist division within New Zealand Trade and Enterprise that help international corporate investors to invest in New Zealand. It provides a single contact point for major international investors, and can facilitate vital communication between investors and their prospective New Zealand partners and Government agencies.
The Invesment Team's services are offered free of charge to investors on a confidential basis. It can respond to enquiries on any aspect of investing in New Zealand.
Opportunities in R&D – Innovative Partnerships programme
The Innovative Partnerships programme is a team of experts within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment dedicated to connecting investors and businesses with the right people, businesses, agencies, research organisations and universities to grow R&D opportunities.
The Government business site designed for small and medium-sized businesses, and the people who advise and support them. Providing free access to a wide range of resources and tools, it is managed and maintained by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE). MBIE works to ensure New Zealand is one of the best places in the world to do business.
Financial Markets Authority (FMA)
The FMA is an independent Crown entity that regulates New Zealand's financial markets. They oversee securities, financial reporting, and company law as they apply to financial services and securities markets.
Inland Revenue Department
Inland Revenue is the Government department responsible for collecting taxes. Its comprehensive website provides specialised information for people moving to New Zealand, including details of agreements with other countries to eliminate certain forms of double taxation, and information about temporary tax exemptions available for people moving here.
Overseas Investment Office
There are few restrictions on establishing, owning or operating a business in New Zealand. However you may need to apply to the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) for consent if your investment involves ‘sensitive’ land such as foreshore or seabed, fishing assets or business assets worth more than $100 million. The OIO is part of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) which is a New Zealand Government department.
