There are 6,000+ social workers nationwide in New Zealand. These services range from educational positions to the Department of Corrections, medical and community-based organisations. The largest employer of social workers here is currently Child, Youth and Family.
At present, social workers are on our Long-Term Skills Shortages List and fewer than 60% of job vacancies are being filled. The demand for social work services is predicted to increase.
