Financial Information

The government subsidises the tuition of students who are New Zealand citizens or residents at state tertiary institutions and approved private training establishments. Students contribute around 25% of the cost of the course, this depends on the type and level of course taken.

For example, the first year of full time study for an Arts degree may cost around $3,000, while fees for the final year’s training as a doctor or dentist can be around $10,000.

Students may be eligible for student allowances or a student loan.

For students who are not New Zealand citizens or residents, the fees will be higher. For example, a first year Bachelor of Commerce course at a leading New Zealand university will be around NZ$25,000 (Approx USA$17,000).

For more details of costs and eligibility for allowances and student loans, see
