Extreme Activities

Extreme Activities

NZ is commonly referred to as the adventure capital of the world, especially down south in the thrill-seeking town of Queenstown. When you take a look at all the options you’ll see why.

  • Bungy Jumping
Queenstown is the home of the first commercial bungy jumping site in the world. But now you can bungy at lots of places around the country including jumping off the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

  • Canyon Swinging
Just outside of Queenstown you’ll find the Shotover Canyon Swing. Harnessed into a giant rope swing, it’s an exhilarating thrill not for those scared of heights! Learn more about this extreme activity by clicking here.

  • Skydiving
Try out the ultimate thrill of freefalling at various places around the country. Check out the New Zealand Skydiving Association.

  • Rock Climbing
There are plenty of climbing options throughout NZ for the avid mountaineer or rock climber.

  • Heliskiing
Heliskiing gets you up to the fresh powder and some of the most amazing rides (and views) in the world. There are loads of places to choose from, but if you’re down South try Heliskiing in Mt Aspiring National Park.

  • Hang Gliding/Paragliding
Amongst the popular air activities, hang gliding and paragliding can offer you a different view of New Zealand. Wherever you choose to do it you’ll see some of the most amazing sceneries in the world. Check out the New Zealand Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association.
  • Windsurfing/Kitesurfing
Kitesurfing has really taken off in New Zealand in the last 10 years, but if you haven’t done it before you’ll need a good teacher. Throughout the country you can find many places to wind and kite surf – after all, New Zealand has an expansive coastline.Visit Windsurfing New Zealand or New Zealand Kiteboarding to learn more.
  • Caving
There are loads of caves to explore in New Zealand, whether you’re an expert spelunker or just trying it out for an adventure. With some of the most challenging caving systems in the world, make sure you take a guide for the more serious caves.

The most accessible caves for all ages are the world famous Waitomo Caves in the South Waikato region. Whether you want to walk through to check out the glow-worms or abseil deep into their depths, there’s something for all skill levels.

Check out the New Zealand Speleological Society for more information about caving.

  • Rafting
For those of you who enjoy the thrill of thrashing downriver, there are amazing rapids throughout New Zealand.

Check out the New Zealand Rafting Association where you can connect with fellow adventure seekers.
